What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical intervention aimed at reshaping the labia minora and sometimes also the labia majora, which comprise the folds of skin encompassing the vulva. This procedure addresses concerns related to the size and symmetry of the labia, offering a solution for women who experience discomfort or decreased sexual wellness due to deflated, enlarged, or asymmetrical labia.

Beyond cosmetic considerations, labiaplasty also targets physical discomfort, such as itching and tugging sensations during activities like exercise or sexual intercourse. Being a small procedure with a big impact, it can enhance both comfort and confidence for individuals experiencing such concerns.

What are the benefits of Labiaplasty?

Introducing the benefits of labiaplasty, this surgical procedure offers a range of positive changes to women's wellbeing, including:

  • Improved sexual satisfaction and intimacy

  • Better fitting and more comfortable clothing

  • Increased self-confidence

  • Reduced discomfort during physical activities

  • Alleviation of pain and irritation

  • Reshaping and/or reduction of labia

  • Treatment for asymmetry or malformed labia

The procedure:

Labiaplasty is commonly performed in two ways: the trim procedure and the wedge procedure. In the trim method, excess tissue is removed with a long incision along the edge of the labia minora. Conversely, the wedge technique involves shorter incisions across the width of the labia, where a V-shaped wedge of tissue is excised before suturing the remaining tissue together.

The procedure, typically lasting one hour, can be conducted under general or local anesthesia. After the surgery, the incision is closed using dissolvable sutures. Both techniques address concerns related to labial length, symmetry, and overall appearance, providing individuals with desired aesthetic outcomes and improved comfort.

A different type of procedure involves fat grafting to the labia majora, to add volume and plumpness. This will aid in improving the skin's appearance, minimizing sagging, and concealing the labia minora.

How is the recovery after labiaplasty?

Following labiaplasty, most patients take about a week off from work, though this can vary depending on job demands. Recovery involves managing swelling and discomfort by cooling the treated area (except in cases of fat grafting).

While use of tampons and intercourse can usually be resumed after four to six weeks, wedge labiaplasty sometimes demands a longer recovery. Although significant swelling typically subsides within the first few weeks, minimal residual swelling may persist for up to six months. It's essential to listen to your body and allow ample time for healing, wearing loose clothing and utilizing a soft pillow for sitting.
