Why hand rejuvenation?

Because of their exposure to the elements our hands often betray the passage of time before other parts of our body. As we age, wrinkles, diminished skin volume, reduced elasticity, prominent veins, tendons, as well as unsightly pigmentations arise, largely attributed to the aging process and sun exposure. Additionally, the loss of fat and muscle in the hands results in accentuation of the bony structure. Indeed, following the face, our hands are often the first aspect noticed when meeting someone new, making it imperative to address their rejuvenation amidst environmental challenges and aging.

What is hand rejuvenation?

Hand rejuvenation encompasses a range of procedures aimed at enhancing the attractiveness of the hands. This comprehensive approach may incorporate diverse treatments, including fat grafting, injectable fillers, biostimulators, radiofrequency microneedling and more, all tailored to soften and improve the appearance of the dorsal aspect of the hands.

What are the different treatment options?

  • Fat grafting: Fat grafting, also known as autologous fat transfer, emerges as a highly beneficial option for hand rejuvenation. Its advantages include a rich supply of stem cells, ample availability, and optimal biocompatibility, with overall long-lasting results, making it an attractive choice for patients with moderately to severely aged hands.  Beyond merely addressing volume deficits, fat grafting stands out for its regenerative qualities. While slightly more invasive than dermal fillers or biostimulators, its biocompatible nature and potential for dermal regeneration through adipose stem cells, position it as an ideal filler for hand rejuvenation. Long-term outcomes often reveal improvements in overall skin texture and appearance, accompanied by the disappearance of visible superficial veins.

  • Dermal fillers: Dermal fillers such as hyaluronic acid, offer a non-invasive approach to hand rejuvenation by restoring lost volume and reducing the visibility of veins and tendons on the dorsal aspect of the hands. The treatment usually involves injecting hyaluronic acid into or directly under the skin, which plumps and hydrates the treated area.   While temporary bruising and swelling may occur initially, dermal fillers typically integrate fully into the tissue within two weeks. Maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months are recommended to sustain aesthetic results. With instant effects and minimal recovery time, dermal fillers present an accessible solution for those seeking to restore volume and rejuvenate the appearance of their hands.

  • Biostimulator injections: Radiesse, a biocompatible, biodegradable filler and biostimulator, consists of fine calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres suspended in a gel. When injected directly under the skin of the hands, it delivers an immediate plumping effect that can endure for up to 2 years. Additionally, Radiesse triggers the body's natural collagen production, providing an added benefit of improved skin quality.  Sculptra is a soft tissue filler and biostimulator designed to volumize hollow areas and rejuvenate deflated skin. Composed of Poly-L-Lactic Acid crystals, it is biocompatible and biodegradable, ensuring injections are safe and unlikely to cause allergic reactions. Approximately 4-6 weeks post-injection, Sculptra crystals prompt collagen synthesis, a crucial element in restoring skin quality, providing lasting results for up to two years.

  • Morpheus 8: Morpheus8 revolutionizes hand rejuvenation with its innovative use of minimally invasive modular radiofrequency (RF) fractional technology. By creating tiny injuries with microneedles, Morpheus8 stimulates collagen production, resulting in tighter, more youthful-looking skin. Its unique "burst" technology delivers bipolar radiofrequency energy, effectively targeting various layers of the skin and promoting deep improvements.   This versatile treatment addresses an array of concerns such as scars, acne scars, stretch marks, enlarged pores, sun damage, wrinkles, and loose or sagging skin. With its ability to uniformly improve skin texture across all skin tones and treat both large and small areas, Morpheus8 ensures long-lasting results and comprehensive hand rejuvenation.

  • Sclerotherapy: Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive approach to address visible veins. Through the injection of a special solution, this technique effectively collapses bulging veins over a period of several days to weeks. As the treated veins collapse, blood flow redirects to healthier vessels, while the body naturally absorbs the collapsed veins. This treatment facilitates a smoother and more youthful appearance of the hands, enhancing overall aesthetics and rejuvenation.
